How We Help

Every year hundreds of adolescents contact Oolagen for help - some on their own; others by referral from friends, parents and/or other agencies. We often deal with very serious problems, including youth who are suicidal or who are so emotionally troubled they won't or can't attend school or hold a job.

Although each young client's life story is unique, there is usually a common denominator - dreadful betrayals of trust by adults. Sadly, 70% of our clients have been (or are currently being) physically or sexually abused.

We help young people build up their own resources and improve their lives without undue intrusion from our professionals. We respond to their mental health needs and counsel them on how to lead more productive lives such as re-establishing and/or improving their relationships with families, friends and other support groups.

Oolagen can work long-term or short-term, doing whatever it takes to meet our clients' needs. We're pragmatic and have discovered that, in many situations, a comparatively few sessions can have a profoundly positive impact. Also, we can continue to work with young people after they have reached 16 (generally the cut-off age for Children's Aid Societies). In fact, in several of our programs, we provide mental health services for youth up to 25 years of age.

We reach out to youth (male and female) who have been abused emotionally, physically or sexually. We help them find ways of dealing with the effects of the abuse, whatever they may be.
