Clinical Volunteer Program

History

In September 2008, Oolagen inaugurated its Clinical Volunteer Program, in which volunteer therapists from the community are trained to participate in clinical counselling sessions as members of Reflecting Teams at Oolagen. The Reflecting Team concept is based upon the ideas of Michael White and David Epston, co-developers of Narrative therapy.

Oolagen’s Commitment

The creation of the Clinical Volunteer Program reflects Oolagen’s commitment to ‘giving back’ to the community in two main ways:
  • Providing therapists (who are often new to the field, and who may have minimal clinical experience) with the opportunity to enhance their existing skills and/or develop new ones by participating in a team-based counselling format
  • Offering our clients the opportunity to have more than one clinician present in counselling sessions in order to provide multiple and more diverse perspectives in helping clients with their problems
Registration for the Clinical Volunteer Program

Admission to the program is based upon a multi-part screening process which determines a mutual suitability/fit for the program between Oolagen and the potential Clinical Volunteer.

If there is a mutual agreement to continue with the process, the potential Clinical Volunteer will go through a training process, which must be deemed by Oolagen to have been successfully completed before any work with clients can take place.

Training Process and Clinical Volunteer Commitment

Two or three times a year, there will be a series of training sessions to prepare those Clinical Volunteers for participating in clinical work at Oolagen as a Reflecting Team member.

We require a six month commitment from trainees after successful completion of the Clinical Volunteers Training Program, and suggest that Clinical Volunteers take part in three separate series (i.e. sit on teams for three different clients) during the six months.
